Stoke-on-Trent crowned the UK’s cheapest city for a takeaway curry, according to new research

Which cities offer the cheapest and most expensive options when it comes to the British favourite, a takeaway curry? Here at Buzz Bingo, we’ve conducted new research and found the cheapest (and most expensive!) cities around the UK to satisfy your curry craving.

The data looked at the 50 most populated areas in the UK and used one of the nation's favourite delivery apps to find out the prices of a standard classic favourite, the chicken tikka masala takeaway. The results found that Stoke-on-Trent is the cheapest place in the UK, with the classic curry costing an average of £9.62.

The average price was calculated by looking at the top 10 takeaway results for each area and filtering for 4-star-plus restaurants only. You can view the top 10 cheapest cities for a takeaway curry below.

Middlesbrough is slightly more expensive at £10.65 but still below the national average.

Although London is known for its fast pace and expensive dining, the capital surprisingly didn’t make the top five list for the most expensive places, with an average cost of £12.14 per takeaway curry. Instead, the most expensive area where prices are heating up goes to Southampton, where the average price is £13.20, followed by Belfast, Milton Keynes, Nottingham and Glasgow.

The South East comes up as the region with the most expensive spots for a takeaway chicken tikka masala, so there’s a high chance that if you live in that region, you’re going to cough up a little more than the national average of £11.28. Alongside Southampton in first place, Brighton and Hove ranks sixth at £12.50, while Bournemouth comes in seventh at £12.47.

Mark Fletcher, our Head of Brand at Buzz Bingo, commented on the research: "Brits love a good curry, and the chicken tikka masala is a national favourite. Those living in cities like Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland, Hull, Bristol and Newcastle are paying less than the national average, while residents in places like Southampton and Belfast are paying almost £2 more. We serve food and drink here at Buzz Bingo, so why not come down to one of our clubs and try a curry for yourself?”

Methodology: Researchers at Buzz Bingo collated a list of the 50 most populous cities in the UK. Searching on Just Eat for chicken tikka masala and filtering for 4-star restaurants, they gathered the price of a standard serving from the top ten search results. After gathering all the prices, the average price was calculated for the restaurants in each city.
