But here’s the thing: the odds of landing a win shift based on the cards on display and your in-game decisions.

Well, probability is the likelihood that something will happen, and it’s often expressed as percentages or odds. Specifically for blackjack, for each extra card you take from the dealer, the probability that you bust (go beyond a 21 total) increases.

In contrast, each decision to stand gives control back to the dealer, even if you’ve totally eliminated the probability of going bust by standing.

Now, for a standard game that’s played following basic blackjack strategy, the house edge is roughly 0.5-1%. This means the casino expects to take roughly £0.50 to £1 for every £100 the player wagers.

But as we say, this isn’t a foregone conclusion. After all, the choices you make and the cards you receive greatly impact blackjack odds. And so too do the rules of the game you play! On that note, there are many ‘player-friendly’ rules out there that work in your favour.

Player‑friendly rules such as blackjack paying 3:2, the dealer standing on soft 17 (S17), allowing doubling after splitting (DAS), and offering late surrender can reduce the house edge from 0.5-1% down to 0.3-0.5%, on average. These rules are generally associated with lower house-edge calculations.

Then again, there are less generous rules out there, too. For example, blackjack paying 6:5 instead of 3:2, the dealer hitting soft 17, or special conditions like the dealer pushing on 22. These rules can easily push the house edge towards or above 2%.
